The Rome Family Y has received a grant from First Niagara Bank to begin a mentoring program with youth from our Before and After School program in Rome. The Kids Are Alright Mentoring Initiative Program will begin in the early part of February, and will be held at the YMCA between the hours of 4:00pm-6:00pm. Mentors and mentees will commit themselves to meeting once a week for two hours or twice a week for one hour during that time frame.  An attendance requirement will be enforced to ensure the quality of the program. There will be an hour and a half training for all mentors in order to discuss the program in more detail, and go over some of the do’s and don’ts in regards to being with the children and interacting with them.

If you are interested in mentoring a child we will need you to fill out a short form and return it no later than January 25th. All mentors will be screened  through the child sex offender registry and have a criminal background check to ensure safety for the children. Once approved we will ask you to fill out a questionnaire, which will help us match you up with the appropriate child based on similar interests.  This will ensure a positive experience with the student while building a relationship with them. Mentors will offer their friendship and guidance to build a healthy mind, body, and spirit; which will improve the child’s self-esteem, decision making skills, school performance and interpersonal relationships.  Must be 21 or older to participate.

If there are any questions, please contact Melissa Dukett at 315-336-3500 ext. 244 or Bruce Hairston at 315-336-3500 ext. 228.
