"I really enjoyed working with the YMCA Center for the creative arts program. The Brubeck Brothers Quartet had a ball working with these young musicians who played in the YCCA jazz band. They were great kids whose eagerness to learn was matched by their enthusiasm for Jazz. This is an original American art form and I found it refreshing that this generation had accomplished so much and enjoyed themselves so completely. The YCCA is a terrific ensemble which embodies a wonderful ideal; keeping the joy of Jazz alive by experiencing it first hand. "

Chris Brubeck, musician

"Being a part of the YCCA bands under the direction of Scott Rutledge as been an amazing part of my life. I have excelled so much as a musician, as well as a person because of this program. Whether it be playing with my peers, or playing with one of my idols, like Dr. John, I am constantly learning new things. This programs has not only opened doors of opportunity for me, but it has also opened my eyes to a whole new world of music, and I am going to miss it tremendously next year while I am in college."

Danielle Salisbury, 08' tenor sax

"What my son has gained is almost indescribable! Excellent training, more playing and performance experience than I could hope for, confidence, friends, the opportunity to record with national artists, relationships with and further professional contacts through established performers, a strong work ethic, and a resume most 30 year olds would dream of."

Trish Madonia, parent

"It is no surprise that the Rome Family YMCA is one of only a handful of YMCA's nationally with a professional music development program or that this program is being used as a model by both the YMCA and other organizations across the country. I applaud the vision of Hank Leo, the Rome YMCA's executive director, and the YMCA's board of trustees for their vision in creating this program. It is essential that we all support programs like this if we are to truly reduce youth violence, improve school performance, decrease delinquency, improve citizenship and help our young people build self-esteem."

Jan Kent, contributor

"When I was asked to perform with the young jazz band at the YMCA in Rome NY, I wasn't sure what to think the outcome was going to be. When I am asked to do something I always try to accommodate and open my mind to new experiences.Having been raised in a family band on the streets of New Orleans and the world I know how important it is to have music in your life as a child to adult.I took the train up from NYC in the Summer of 2007 up to Rome NY , one of the most beautiful rides I have ever taken.I was hosted by Hank Leo and taken to the YMCA where I met the band I was to record one of my originals with, as well a standard and Christmas song. The band was a wide range in age from the 8 year old drummer to the 17 year old guitar player. We had one rehearsal and they learned the hits and arrangements very quickly. They sounded great and together and concentrated on creating the best sound they could in so little time.We went to the studio and they were all very professional, to the point and attentive.I was very happy with the results. Professional and played with heart, I look forward to hearing the completed CDs.I think the program is a great one, it allows a kid with a dream to pursue them in a positive focused environment. That is irreplaceable.Best of Luck in the future!"

Ingrid Lucia, recording artist

"We had the privilege of playing at the Capitol Theatre in Rome, NY this past January. Aside from the grand old venue, generous staff, and gracious crowd, playing with the YCCA band under the leadership of Scott Rutledge was an unexpected pleasure. These kids totally blew us away! The level of musicianship they demonstrated was truly exceptional. As a Teacher myself, it was inspiring to hear young people play with the maturity of many folks twice their age.Congratulations on a fine program. Keep up the good work, and we look forward to seeing you in the near future."

Joe Miquelon of The Elders, recording artist
